Scholars Moblie Mural
Capstone Project by Jenna Deutch and Jackie Flam
Within a time of so much separation, what is it that we can do to insinuate that togetherness is still an option? The project we aim to make focuses on the differing, yet unifying, factors of all 12 Scholars programs. We want to do our share in connecting others, even on a smaller scale, since the unjust actions of the criminal justice system inspired us to promote unity within a direct community– the College Park Scholars. We are planning on painting eight canvases with acrylic paint to spell out the word “Scholars.” The first letter will be made using a treble clef, the second a magnifying glass, the third a series of leaves in a plant, the fourth gears, the fifth a microphone, the sixth a globe, the seventh an American flag, and the eighth using a money sign. We feel this would capture the culture the Scholars programs have created because to us, Scholars fosters a community of helpfulness and togetherness, and while the mural is divided into sections and techniques, the project as a whole shows that a community is created when these parts of a puzzle come together. This project aims to reach current University of Maryland students who engage with the College Park Scholars program and also all prospective University of Maryland students. The main method I will use will be acrylic painting (specifically realism and painterly art styles) to convey the message felt behind the word “scholars.” My goal for the project aims to show that while every program is different, we are all connected through community, service, and empowerment.
